Several of the week’s most notable developments clustered around TSMCTaiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing CompanyTSMC is named as a founding partner of the EPIC Center.’s 2026 North America OIP Ecosystem Forum in Santa Clara, where multiple ecosystem partners announced expanded collaborations. The forum framed a broader picture in which AIartificial intelligence-assisted chip design, supply-chain pressure and new hardware architectures all continued to advance in parallel.
On the research side, Washington University and collaborators reported heterogeneous photonic integration of single-crystalline nanomembranes on silicon and silicon nitride. Another team led by LANLLos Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Pisa described self-organizing networks of nanowires and nanoparticles that adapt their electrical connections to process information directly in hardware, with possible use in energy-efficient local AIartificial intelligence for robots, autonomous vehicles and satellites.
Quantum work also remained active. Researchers from the University of Pavia, CEA-Leti and STMicroelectronics developed a fully integrated quantum frequency processor on a silicon chip, combining quantum-state generation, frequency mixing and programmable spectral control on a silicon-photonics platform. Microsoft also made topological qubits from its Majorana 2 chip available to DARPADefense Advanced Research Projects Agency (see ARPA) for independent testing, while IonQ reported a real-time quantum error-correction decoder that runs on a single off-the-shelf CPUcentral processing unitMain processor that executes program instructions and performs data operations. with very low added delay in benchmark simulations.
Measurement and test topics featured prominently as well. Keysight is supporting UC Berkeley research on new over-the-air test methods for increasingly complex 6G devices and systems. Separately, Siemens EDA1. electronic design automationSoftware tools for designing, simulating, verifying and laying out electronic circuits.2. equipment data acquisitionSystem or method for collecting, storing, exchanging or analyzing data. discussed how newer chips generate far more test data than older planar designs, and how different test options and standards affect the movement of that data through the test flow.
The week also highlighted industry capacity and skills. In Germany, QUDORA was selected to lead a consortium for the NFQC-1k project, which aims to build a trapped-ion quantum computer and a pilot manufacturing line. In the U.S., the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Purdue University announced a joint effort to train semiconductor engineers across design, manufacturing, equipment, materials, testing and advanced packaging.
