180 nm (0.18 µm)

The 180 nm process refers to the manufacturing technology that came into use at leading semiconductor manufacturers such as Intel, Texas Instruments, IBM and TSMC from 1999 onward.

Following the historical development in which structures were reduced by a factor of 1.4 every two to three years (corresponding to a halving of chip area), the 180 nm technology node follows the 250 nm process. The designation was defined by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS).

One of the first processors manufactured using this technology was the Intel Pentium III (Coppermine). For the first time, the feature size was smaller than the wavelength of the argon-fluoride lasers used for exposure (193 nm).
