STMicroelectronics has introduced the SafeSense VD56GA, a 1.1-megapixel automotive image sensor for infrared in-cabin sensing in driver and occupant monitoring systems. The device is built on ST’s DeepNIR BSI pixel architecture and is aimed at camera designs that must work reliably in low light and other difficult interior lighting conditions.

According to ST, the new sensor delivers 35% higher modulation transfer function and nearly 60% higher quantum efficiency than the previous generation. Combined with the infrared-optimized pixel structure, this is intended to produce sharper images and stronger sensitivity in the near-infrared range. The sensor uses 2.43 x 2.43 µm pixels and a global-shutter architecture.

ST also says the 1.1-MPmassively parallel array achieves virtual 2-MPmassively parallel performance, which may allow designers to use simpler optics and less demanding infrared filtering. The small CSPchip scale package package is meant to support discreet camera integration in space-constrained vehicle interiors. Embedded image-processing functions such as mirror, crop, dark calibration, auto exposure, and piecewise-linear processing remove the need for external image processing.

On the automotive qualification side, the VD56GA is undergoing AECAdvanced Equipment ControllerControl unit for monitoring or regulating a technical process or piece of equipment.-Q100 Grade 2 qualification and is specified for a -40°C to +125°C junction-temperature range. It is also designed for integration in systems targeting ISO 26262 ASIL B and ISO/SAE 21434 compliance. Samples are available now through ST sales offices.
