GlobalFoundries has finalized a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Research and Development Office for up to $375 million in funding over five years. The award is aimed at accelerating the company’s Quantum Technology Solutions business and supporting the build-out of a U.S.-based ecosystem for quantum chip development and manufacturing.
The company says the program is meant to help quantum computing firms move beyond research and prototyping toward commercial-scale production. The agreement is tied to milestone achievement, and it is framed as part of a broader effort to strengthen the domestic quantum semiconductor supply chain.
GlobalFoundries links the initiative to its work on cryogenic CMOS1. complementary metal-oxide semiconductorCircuit technology combining n- and p-channel MOS transistors for low static power consumption.2. complementary metal-oxide-semiconductorCMOS is a fundamental semiconductor technology for digital and analog circuits. technologies, along with advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration. These capabilities are presented as the technical basis for scaling quantum hardware in a manufacturing environment rather than treating it purely as a laboratory effort.
The announcement also places the quantum program alongside GlobalFoundries’ recent push in silicon photonics. According to the company, both quantum computing and next-generation optical connectivity are expected to underpin future AIartificial intelligence infrastructure and advanced computing systems. The new funding follows the company’s stated strategy of expanding research and manufacturing capabilities for emerging technology customers.
